NLC President Was Not Arrested- Nigerian Police

This was done to ensure his safety and protect him from possible harm during the scuffle.

Owerri, Imo State- The Imo State Police Command has issued a press release to clarify reports alleging the arrest of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Owerri.

In a statement released by the Police command spokespersons, ASP Okoye Henry, on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.

According to the press release, Comrade Joe Ajaero was in Owerri as part of the NLC’s preparations for a mega protest rally in the state. During their planning, discussions arose about the potential lockdown of essential facilities, including the airport.

“This led to resistance from some workers and other individuals, resulting in scuffles, heated arguments, and ultimately an attack on the NLC President by a mob.

“Upon receiving the report of the incident, the Imo Police Command swiftly deployed police operatives to the scene. The Officer in Charge exercised operational discretion by taking Comrade Joe Ajaero into protective custody at the State Command Headquarters. This was done to ensure his safety and protect him from possible harm during the scuffle.

“The Commissioner of Police then directed that the NLC President be taken to the Police Medical Services in Owerri, where he would receive medical attention following the attack. He was subsequently provided with adequate security cover to continue his other legitimate engagements for the day.

The press release also highlights the existence of a court injunction from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Owerri (Suit No. NICN/OW/41/2023, dated October 27, 2023). The injunction prohibits the NLC from conducting the planned protest rally in Owerri.

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Police Command, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde, psc (+), urged all concerned parties to adhere to the court’s directives.

He added that compliance with the court order is essential to avoid jeopardizing the current security arrangements in Owerri and other parts of Imo State, especially with the upcoming election process scheduled for November 11, 2023.
