Abuja, NIGERIA – The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) has called upon mediators and peace-building stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to promoting dialogue, understanding, and cooperation to foster world peace.

Mallam Abdur-Rahman Adebayo Aderinoye, Chairman of ICMC Abuja Branch, made this impassioned plea during the Institute’s September General Meeting held at the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre in Area 11, Abuja.

Aderinoye stressed the importance of accelerating platforms that bridge differences and encourage a collective dedication to peace that transcends racial and national boundaries.

He articulated that the paramount goal of every critical stakeholder should be to cultivate a global culture of peace firmly rooted in the principle of equal treatment for all.

He, however, traced the origins of the International Day of Peace to September 30, 1981, when the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 36/67, urging a worldwide ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities on that day.

In a world marked by diverse cultures and perspectives, the ICMC’s call for equal treatment and the promotion of peace resonates as a powerful message to build a more harmonious and equitable global society.

“Every third (3rd) Tuesday of September each year was declared as the International Day of Peace with the first official observance taking place on September 21, 1982, and later in 2001, i.e. two decades after.

“However, it was in 2002 that the United Nations General Assembly declared every 21st day of September as ‘International Day of Peace’ to be celebrated annually” ARA explained.

He therefore noted that since then, every 21st of September has been instrumental in promoting dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among people and nations.

The Chairman further highlighted the significance of the International Day of Peace, describing it as a platform to bridge divides and nurture a shared commitment to peace, regardless of race or nationality.

He also stressed that the day’s goal is to establish a global culture of peace where everyone is treated equitably.

“The International Day of Peace serves as an opportunity to educate individuals about the importance of peaceful coexistence and conflict prevention, with the ultimate aim of creating a non-violent and harmonious world.

It unquestionably provides a platform for communities and individuals to contribute to a more peaceful world.”

This year’s International Day of Peace, themed “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the Global Goals,” has been emphasized by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to underscore our collective responsibility in advancing peace and highlight the critical role of peace in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as emphasize the need to engage diverse actors, including the 1.2 billion young people worldwide, to ensure the success of these goals.
