Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal Dumps PDP, Defects To APC

The event was led by the Deputy Governor, Mani Mummuni, alongside senior government officials and influential political figures across the state.

Gusau, Zamfara State– Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing prolonged internal crisis and leadership disagreements within the opposition party.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the governor’s media aide, Nuhu Anka, who said the decision followed what he described as “careful consideration and extensive consultations” with stakeholders, political leaders and supporters of the current administration in the state.

According to the statement, the defection was formally concluded during a political gathering held at the Government House in Gusau, where top officials of the state government and key political stakeholders endorsed the move.

The event was led by the Deputy Governor, Mani Mummuni, alongside senior government officials and influential political figures across the state.

The statement read, “The Government and APC family of Zamfara State wish to formally inform the general public of an important political development following extensive consultations with stakeholders, political leaders, elders, and supporters across the state.”

It added: “After careful consideration, and in the overriding interest of stability, progress, and the sustainable development of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, has decided to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

The governor’s spokesman explained that the decision was largely influenced by the persistent internal crisis rocking the PDP at both national and state levels.

Mr. Anka said the party had been grappling with leadership disagreements and unresolved structural challenges that have created uncertainty within its ranks.

According to him, the ongoing crisis in the PDP had become a source of distraction capable of undermining governance and slowing the delivery of democratic dividends to residents of the state.

He said the governor was compelled to take the step after concluding that remaining within the PDP could hinder his administration’s development agenda.

Mr. Anka further stated, “The governor emphasized that his primary responsibility remains the peace, security, and development of Zamfara State. Consequently, it became necessary to align with a political platform that provides greater unity, stability, and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government for the benefit of the people.”

The statement also noted that the governor believes joining the APC would provide an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between Zamfara State and the Federal Government.

The state government, however, called on residents and political stakeholders to remain calm and supportive of the decision.

The statement urged party members, community leaders and supporters across the state to embrace the development peacefully, emphasizing that the defection was aimed at promoting unity, stability and sustainable development.
