Lokoja,  Kogi State– Local vigilante groups in Isanlu Makutu, Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, have successfully repelled an attack by suspected armed terrorists who attempted to invade the School of Nursing in the community.

According to information obtained by Afrika Eyes, the armed assailants launched an assault on the institution Monday evening (today), but were met with fierce resistance from local security teams.

However, the ensuing gun battle forced the attackers to retreat.

Meanwhile,  residents said the swift response of the vigilantes prevented what could have been a tragic incident.

“They came to invade the school, but our vigilantes confronted them immediately,” one resident said. “There was heavy shooting, but they were overpowered.”

As of the time of filing this report, calm has returned to Isanlu Makutu, though residents have urged the government to strengthen security around educational institutions in the area to forestall future attacks.

Afrika Eyes had earlier reported that terrorists on Sunday attacked a commercial bus along the Kabba–Okene route, injuring several passengers and kidnapping many others in Kogi State.

One of the passengers, identified as Ayodele Aduroshakin, managed to escape and recounted his harrowing experience.

According to Aduroshakin, the gunmen ambushed the vehicle, firing several shots at it before using machetes to break through the doors.

“This is how we were kidnapped,” he said. “I was seated here when they shot at the vehicle door, but the bullets did not penetrate. They then used their cutlasses to destroy the door. Look at the blood stains inside the car.”

He added that the attackers, whom he described as Fulani men, opened fire on the driver before forcing passengers into the bush.

“They shot at our driver and dragged everyone out. They took us into the bush. One of them was wearing military camouflage, and all of them were Fulani. As we were going, I managed to run away,” Aduroshakin narrated.

However, the number of abducted passengers remains unknown as of the time of filing this report. Security operatives have yet to release an official statement on the attack.

Residents and travellers have expressed growing concern over the increasing rate of kidnappings and terrorist assaults on highways connecting Kwara and Kogi states.
