TUC Disowns Violent Protest At Kwara Lower Niger River Basin, Condemns Crisis

According to the statement, the TUC leadership in Kwara State, under its chairman and affiliated unions, strongly condemned the violence in its entirety, maintaining that the congress has always relied on dialogue, consultation and collective bargaining in resolving industrial disputes.

Ilorin, Kwara State-The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Kwara State Council, has distanced itself from the violent protest that reportedly erupted at the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority on Monday, insisting that the labour centre neither participated in nor endorsed the action.

In a disclaimer issued on May 11, 2026, the union said its attention was drawn to a purported and unprofessional protest at the agency, stressing that violence and disorder are not part of the organisation’s methods of agitating for workers’ welfare.

According to the statement, the TUC leadership in Kwara State, under its chairman and affiliated unions, strongly condemned the violence in its entirety, maintaining that the congress has always relied on dialogue, consultation and collective bargaining in resolving industrial disputes.

The statement said, “The TUC state council under our Amiable chairman of the center and the affiliated unions condemned the violent in it’s entirety and never participated in such industrial violent to agitates members welfare.

“Finally, we want to equivocally disassociate TUC from the violent and the crisis at kwara state Lower Niger River Basin Authority on the 11th May, 2026.,” the statement added.

Afrika Eyes had earlier reported that members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)  and Trade Union Congress on Monday shut down the premises of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority in Ilorin, Kwara State, over alleged mismanagement, intimidation and threats against workers by the management of the agency.

The protest, which crippled activities at the complex for several hours, saw aggrieved workers and labour leaders barricading entrances to the authority’s premises while chanting solidarity songs and demanding immediate intervention from the Federal Government.

The protesters accused the Managing Director of the agency, Engr. Olumoroti, of allegedly victimising workers, disregarding labour laws and creating an atmosphere of fear within the establishment.

Placards displayed by the protesters carried inscriptions such as: “Olumoroti Is Working Against The Renewed Hope Agenda!”, “Mr President’s Efforts To Fix Nigeria Must Not Be Weakened By Bad Management In Our Organization!.”

“Respect Due Process, Respect Labour Act,” and “Stop Victimization Of Labour Leaders In Your Establishment.”

Others read: “NLC Says No To Victimization Of Workers In The Lower Niger River Basin Authority.”
