Truck Loaded with Cement Crushes Shops, Kills 10 Including Pregnant Woman In Ondo

Akure, Ondo State- No fewer than ten people were feared dead on Wednesday evening, October 22, 2025, in a fatal road accident that occurred in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
It was gathered that the crash involved a truck loaded with cement that allegedly lost control and rammed into roadside shops along the Owo–Akungba–Ikare Akoko expressway. Among the victims was a pregnant woman.
The incident, which happened near the popular Holy Trinity Church, threw the university town into panic as residents and students of Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) rushed to the scene to rescue victims.
Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, said the accident involved a truck carrying bags of cement that ran into a barricade near the university gate.
“The truck lost control after running into a barricade in front of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko. No fewer than eight people were killed, comprising five males, two females, and one male child,” Ibitoye said.
He advised motorists to always ensure their vehicles are in good condition before setting out on trips, while also urging drivers to obey traffic regulations to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the AAUA Students’ Union Government (SUG), Akinibobola Ajidagba, described the accident as heartbreaking.
“We regret to inform the student populace that an articulated vehicle belonging to the Dangote Group of Companies suffered brake failure from Ikare en route Akungba and destroyed the barricade erected at the university’s main gate,” Ajidagba said.
“As it stands, close to ten people have lost their lives due to this tragic incident. The Students’ Union has made several efforts to ensure trucks stop plying Akungba roads, as this poses a great danger to the lives and property of our students,” he added.
He urged students to remain calm and stay away from the expressway for safety reasons, assuring them that the union would continue to push for measures to prevent future occurrences.
