Tinubu Decorates Tunji Disu As Acting IGP 48 Days To Retirement
In a symbolic moment, President Tinubu personally pinned the new insignia on Disu’s uniform, officially confirming his elevation to the highest position in the Nigeria Police Force
Abuja, Nigeria– President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as the Acting Inspector-General of Police at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The decoration ceremony, which took place at exactly 4:00 p.m. inside the President’s office at the State House, was attended by top government functionaries including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
In a symbolic moment, President Tinubu personally pinned the new insignia on Disu’s uniform, officially confirming his elevation to the highest position in the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu’s appointment comes just 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, the date on which he would have attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.
Meanwhile, under the amended Police Act, Inspectors-General of Police are entitled to a fixed four-year tenure irrespective of age or years of service. This provision means that despite his impending retirement date, Disu could legally remain in office until 2030 if the tenure provision is upheld and not successfully challenged.
The development mirrors previous controversies surrounding police leadership tenure and succession planning, particularly in relation to the interpretation of statutory retirement rules versus fixed-term provisions embedded in the Police Act.
The ceremony took place barely 24 hours after former IGP Kayode Egbetokun tendered his resignation letter to President Tinubu on Tuesday.
Egbetokun, who cited pressing family issues requiring his undivided attention, stepped down amid mounting speculation about internal restructuring within the nation’s security architecture.
President Tinubu, while addressing attendees at the ceremony, commended Egbetokun for what he described as dedicated service to the nation, acknowledging his contributions to law enforcement and internal security during his time in office.
