Katsina State– A road safety officer, Ibrahim Dalhatu Tafoki, has been killed by suspected terrorists in the Tafoki axis of Faskari Local Government Area, Katsina State, raising fresh concerns over the fragility of recent peace efforts in the area.
Ibrahim, who was a serving official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), was attacked on Tuesday evening along the Funtua–Tafoki road, a stretch that has remained vulnerable to violent assaults despite repeated security assurances.
Afrika Eyes gathered that the assailants intercepted the officer while he was on his motorcycle, shot him dead and made away with the bike.
The killing occurred in an area that has, in recent weeks, witnessed peace and reconciliation meetings between government-backed intermediaries and armed bandit groups, aimed at restoring calm after years of deadly attacks, kidnappings and displacement.
The deceased was the younger brother of Rt. Hon. Shehu Dalhatu Tafoki, the Member of the House of Representatives representing Kankara–Faskari–Sabua Federal Constituency, and a son of the Tafoki traditional leader, Alhaji Dalhatu Tafoki.
Reacting to the incident on Wednesday, a conflict-tracking source Bakatsine disclosed that the killing has intensified fears among residents and cast doubt on the effectiveness and sincerity of the ongoing peace initiatives in Faskari LGA.
Katsina State has remained one of the epicentres of banditry in northwestern Nigeria, with repeated attacks on commuters, farmers and security personnel, even as authorities continue to promote dialogue and amnesty deals with armed groups.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Katsina State Government nor security agencies had issued an official statement on the killing.
