Tea Vendor Arrested For Beating 20-Year-Old To Death Over Alleged Theft In Jigawa

Dutse, Jigawa State – The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a tea vendor following the death of a 20-year-old man who was allegedly beaten by the vendor in Dutse Local Government Area.

It was gathered that the incident occurred after the young man was accused of stealing bread, milk, and noodles.

In a statement released on Monday, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, spokesperson for the command, syated that the suspect, Abdulrashibu Ya’u, had accused the deceased, Hassan Garba, of stealing his bread, milk, noodles, and petrol.

Ya’u said that the suspect tied Garba with a rope and repeatedly struck him with a stick until Garba lost consciousness.

The statement read, “On 19/08/2024 at about 0500hrs, information from the village head of Sararai village, Jigawar tsada town in Dutse local government council disclosed that, a tea vendor by name Abdulrashibu Ya’u ‘m’ 40yrs of Sararai village has seriously beaten up one Hassan Garba ‘m’ 20yrs of the same address and became unconscious based on the allegation of stealing his bread, milk, noodles and petrol.

“Upon receiving the report, the patrol team promptly proceeded to the scene, arrest the suspect and convey the victim to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital for immediate medical attention.

“Regretfully, on their arrival, the medical doctor on duty certified him dead. The corpse was examined photographed and later released to his relatives for burial according to Islamic rite.

“The suspect admitted during questioning at the State Criminal Investigation Department Dutse that the deceased had upset him by stealing his goods to the point where he had informed his parents about it, but nothing had been done.

He said, “Upon apprehending the deceased at this point, he made the decision to tie him with a rope and begin striking him with a stick in secret.

“Neighbors in the area heard the deceased’s cries for help, but they were unable to save him until police officers showed up.

“Upon completion of discreet investigation, the suspect will be diligently arraigned in court to face the full weight of the law,” he added.
