Sowore Backs Aisha Yesufu’s 2027 FCT Senate Bid, Says She Joined ‘Wrong Party’
Sowore made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Channels Television, where he insisted that activists must actively participate in politics rather than remain on the sidelines.
Abuja, Nigeria– Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has declared support for fellow activist Aisha Yesufu over her ambition to contest the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, while faulting her decision to join a different political platform.
Sowore made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Channels Television, where he insisted that activists must actively participate in politics rather than remain on the sidelines.
“No, I totally support her. I’ve always told her that good people, people who believe that they can do things, should get into politics,” Sowore said.
The former presidential candidate argued that political participation remains one of the most important forms of activism needed to transform society.
“The business of politics is actually the biggest activism that has to be done to save society,” he added.
Despite backing Yesufu’s senatorial ambition, Sowore criticised her choice of political party, saying she should have aligned with his political movement instead.
“So I totally support her, and I hope she wins. Even though I think that she’s in the wrong party, she should have joined our party,” he said.
Yesufu recently dumped the African Democratic Congress and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where she formally declared her intention to run for the FCT Senate seat in 2027.
Explaining her decision, the activist said her move was driven by a stronger political conviction and her support for former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
“This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she said.
Yesufu also stated that she was entering active electoral politics beyond mere party membership.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she added.
According to her, she completed all pending responsibilities within the ADC before exiting the party to ensure a smooth transition.
