Senator Saliu Mustapha Pushes For Urgent Federal Intervention At Deadly Oko-Olowo Intersection Following Fresh Tragedy
The safety of our people is non-negotiable,” the Turaki of Ilorin declared. “We will continue to work with all relevant authorities to ensure lasting solutions.
Abuja, Nigeria– In response to a series of deadly accidents at the Oko-Olowo intersection in Ilorin, Senator Saliu Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District, has intensified efforts to secure urgent intervention from the Federal Government to address the persistent safety hazards at the site.
The accident, which claimed multiple lives, is the latest in a series of deadly incidents that have plagued the intersection, drawing widespread concern from residents and road users.
The location has long been described as a “death trap,” with repeated calls for a structural overhaul and improved safety measures.
Reacting swiftly to the tragedy, Senator Mustapha escalated the matter directly to the Federal Ministry of Works in Abuja.
He held high-level consultations with the Minister of Works, Senator (Engr.) Dave Umahi, and the Minister of State for Works, Barr. Bello Muhammad Goronyo.
These engagements, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Senator’s Senior Legislative Aide, Salman Alhaji Salman, were part of the Senator’s commitment to proactive legislative representation and intergovernmental collaboration.
“During the engagement, Senator Mustapha secured the firm assurances of the Honourable Ministers that engineers from the Federal Ministry of Works will be deployed to the Oko-Olowo intersection for an immediate on-the-spot assessment,” the statement said.
The assessment will focus on identifying immediate, medium-term, and long-term solutions that will permanently address the structural flaws and recurring safety risks at the intersection.
Senator Umahi, who previously served alongside Mustapha in the 10th Senate before his ministerial appointment, commended the Senator’s proactive response and dedication to the welfare of his constituents.
“I must commend Senator Saliu Mustapha for his quick intervention and unrelenting commitment to public safety. This kind of representation is exactly what we need at this time,” Umahi said during the meeting.
In his own remarks, Senator Mustapha thanked the Ministers for their swift response and reiterated his unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of the people of Kwara Central.
“The safety of our people is non-negotiable,” the Turaki of Ilorin declared. “We will continue to work with all relevant authorities to ensure lasting solutions. This is a matter of life and death, and it must be treated with the urgency it deserves.”
He also acknowledged ongoing interim measures reportedly being undertaken by the Kwara State Government and noted that these efforts would complement the expected interventions from the Federal Government.
“The State Government’s efforts are commendable, and they will certainly help to bridge the gap as we await a more permanent and comprehensive solution from the Federal level,” Senator Mustapha added.
Residents of the area have expressed both grief and cautious optimism, hopeful that the Senator’s engagement will finally bring an end to the harrowing series of accidents at the notorious intersection.
