Senate Replaces Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan With Aniekan Bassey As Diaspora Committee Chair
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s position had remained uncertain following her recent suspension from Senate activities.
Abuja, Nigeria– The Nigerian Senate has appointed Senator Aniekan Bassey as the new Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, replacing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement in Thursday during plenary, marking a key leadership shift in the committee overseeing diaspora and civil society affairs.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s position had remained uncertain following her recent suspension from Senate activities.
Although a Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako, ruled for her reinstatement—ordering her to tender an apology—the Senate claims it has not yet received a certified true copy of the judgment.
Earlier in February, Akpoti-Uduaghan was removed as Chair of the Senate Committee on Local Content and reassigned to the Diaspora and NGOs Committee.
However, her latest replacement appears to further sideline her despite the court order.
