Senate Orders Probe Into FCT Demolitions, Invites Wike For Explanations
The Senate expects a report from the committee within a set timeframe.
Abuja, Nigeria- The Senate has called for an investigation into the recent demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and has established a committee to probe the issue.
The committee is tasked with examining the reasons behind the demolitions, which have displaced numerous residents, and will invite the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to clarify the government’s actions.
The motion, presented by Senator Ireti Kingibe from the FCT Senatorial District, raised concerns over the legality of the demolitions, urging an immediate halt to further actions. The Senate expects a report from the committee within a set timeframe.
Meanwhile, the Senate has summoned the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC after the company repeatedly failed to respond to invitations regarding the Odukpani-Itu Highway project.
Located in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, the Odukpani-Itu Highway connects the town of Odukpani in Cross River to Itu in Akwa Ibom, serving as a vital transport and economic link for the South-South region.
Senator Osita Ngwu, who sponsored the motion, highlighted that Julius Berger has ignored multiple requests to provide details of their involvement in the project, despite receiving over N18 billion in public funds.
The Senate has strongly condemned Julius Berger’s refusal to comply with lawful invitations, describing it as an act of contempt toward the National Assembly and an affront to constitutional authority.
As a result, the Senate has exercised its constitutional powers, issuing a warrant of arrest to ensure the attendance of Julius Berger’s Managing Director at the rescheduled investigative hearing.
