Power Surge Triggers Fire In Eight-Flat Residential Building In Kwara

Ilorin, Kwara State– A fire outbreak triggered by a power surge on Wednesday afternoon engulfed parts of a residential building at the Oloje Housing Estate area of Ilorin, destroying sections of the property before firefighters brought the situation under control.
The incident, which occurred at about 3:28 p.m. on May 20, 2026, happened at Face Two, Oloje Housing Estate in the Kwara State capital, according to the Kwara State Fire Service.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the agency disclosed that the affected structure was a residential building comprising about eight-bedroom flats, adding that the fire mainly affected the sitting room and dining section of the property.
The Fire Service said its personnel responded swiftly after receiving a distress call and were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the building as well as nearby houses.
The statement, “The incident involved a residential building consisting of about eight-bedroom flats. The fire affected the sitting room and dining area of the building.
“Firefighters responded promptly to the distress call and successfully brought the fire under control, thereby preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties.”
According to the agency, preliminary findings showed that the fire outbreak was caused by a power surge.
The Service further confirmed that no life was lost and no injury was recorded during the incident.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the fire was attributed to a power surge. No casualty was recorded during the incident,” he said.
Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service urged residents across the state to take precautionary safety measures against fire incidents linked to electricity fluctuations and faulty installations.
The Director advised members of the public to always switch off electrical appliances whenever they are not in use and ensure that electrical fittings and installations in their homes are properly maintained.
He also called on residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any fire emergency to the nearest fire station for quick intervention.
