Peter Obi: Yahoo Boys Are Geniuses Who Need Guidance, Not Condemnation
Many of these young people are bright and creative. They need direction, not condemnation
Akwa, Anambra State- Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has described many internet fraudsters—popularly known as “yahoo boys”—as “genuinely gifted individuals” whose creativity and intelligence should be redirected toward national development rather than criminality.
Speaking on Saturday at the Golden Health Conference held at the Archbishop Patterson Auditorium of All Saints’ Cathedral in Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi urged Nigerians to see the potential in the youth often labeled as fraudsters and to help channel their talents into productive innovation.
The conference, themed “Money Beyond Wealth,” focused on promoting ethical leadership and moral renewal among young people.
Obi argued that with proper mentorship and opportunities, many of those engaged in internet fraud could become innovators and entrepreneurs capable of driving technological and economic growth.
“Many of these young people are bright and creative. They need direction, not condemnation. If we guide their energy into technology, business, and problem-solving, they can contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s progress,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor revealed that he cut short a two-day trip to the United Kingdom to attend the event, describing it as a timely intervention in a society that often celebrates material wealth over moral values.
He warned that Nigeria cannot attain greatness while glorifying corruption and deceit, stressing that a nation that rewards wrongdoing undermines integrity and genuine development.
“While money is important, it is only a small part of true wealth. Real wealth uplifts others—it improves education, reduces poverty, and creates opportunities for decent livelihoods,” Obi said.
He lamented that the country’s obsession with money has eroded its moral foundation, calling on leaders to lead by example in order to restore public trust.
“Leadership must lead by example. No society can progress when dishonesty is rewarded and integrity is mocked,” he added.
Obi also encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace hard work and the dignity of labour, noting that no nation is built by miracles but by the commitment of its people.
He further advocated for justice, equity, and fairness in governance, stressing that Nigeria’s challenge is not the absence of resources but the lack of will to do what is right.
