Panic As False Bandit Alarm Disrupts Classes In Kwara Community, Police Debunk Attack, Vow To Go After Fake News Pushers

Ilorin,  Kwara State– The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed as entirely false a viral alarm alleging a bandit invasion at Government Girls Secondary School, Oke-Oyi, describing the report as misleading, panic-driven, and capable of triggering unnecessary public fear.

The incident, which occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, threw the school and surrounding areas into brief chaos after a woman reportedly rushed into the school premises screaming that suspected bandits had invaded the area.

This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday, by the kwara state police command spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.

The alarm immediately triggered panic among students, teachers, and residents, leading to temporary disruption of learning and heightened fear within the community.

However, the Police Command, in a swift response, deployed operatives from the Oke-Oyi Division to the scene to ascertain the situation and restore calm.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the entire report was false, with no evidence of any bandit activity, attack, or security breach within the school or anywhere in Oke-Oyi and its environs.

The Command confirmed that the panic was solely caused by an unverified claim allegedly made by a woman whose identity is yet to be officially disclosed.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Ojo Adekimi, condemned the spread of fake security alerts, warning that such actions endanger public peace and could divert security attention from genuine threats.

He stressed that misinformation on security matters remains a serious offence capable of attracting legal consequences.

The Police Command further disclosed that efforts have commenced to identify and invite the woman responsible for the false alarm for questioning, adding that she would be prosecuted in line with laws against spreading false information and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Residents of the state were urged to remain calm, vigilant, and avoid spreading unverified security reports capable of causing panic and confusion.

The Command assured the public that Kwara remains safe and that adequate security deployments are in place across the state to respond promptly to any genuine threat.

The Police also urged residents to channel security concerns through official platforms rather than relying on rumours or social media panic alerts.
