Nigeria Police Deny SARS Resurgence, Urge Public To Ignore Rumors
He reaffirmed that SARS, which was officially disbanded on October 11, 2020, remains dissolved.
Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has refuted claims that the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been reinstated under a new set of rules.
In a statement released on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi dismissed the circulating rumors as misinformation.
He reaffirmed that SARS, which was officially disbanded on October 11, 2020, remains dissolved.
“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is not back in operation. The recent information regarding SARS reformation and rules of engagement should be treated with caution,” Adejobi said.
The police urged Nigerians to verify information from credible sources and avoid spreading unverified reports. Citizens were also advised to follow the NPF’s official social media handles for accurate updates: @PoliceNG on X, @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram.
The disbandment of SARS followed nationwide #EndSARS protests in 2020, triggered by widespread reports of human rights abuses by the unit.
However, despite its dissolution, concerns over police brutality persist, fueling speculation about its possible return.
