Abuja, Nigeria- The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has condemned the unauthorized use of police uniforms by a social media influencer, Mr. Martins Otse, widely recognized by his alias “VDM.”

In a video posted on his platforms, Otse can be seen donning official police gear, sparked public concern and backlash from law enforcement authorities.

The NPF released a statement on Saturday,  disassociating itself from the portrayal, stressing that the use of its uniforms and accoutrements without official clearance is a direct violation of the law.

“The Nigeria Police Force unequivocally condemns the unauthorized appearance of Mr. Martins Otse in our official uniform,” the statement said

The Police Force warned against the trivialization of police symbols which undermines the integrity and public trust in law enforcement.

The statement said the force has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the Police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.

“It is important to remind the public that the unauthorized use of Police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements constitutes a criminal offense, as stipulated in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, and is subject to strict penalties.

“While the Nigeria Police Force recognizes and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the content creation space, we strongly caution against the misuse of Police uniforms or symbols. Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated,” the statement read.
