NEC Issues One-Week Deadline To Kwara, Kebbi, Adamawa Over State Police Reports
Diri warned that the council would take “appropriate decisions” should the states fail to meet the deadline.
Abuja, Nigeria- The National Economic Council (NEC) has issued a one-week ultimatum to Kwara, Kebbi, and Adamawa states to submit their reports on the establishment of state police.
Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, disclosed the ultimatum during a press briefing at the State House on Thursday following the NEC meeting presided over by Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
Diri warned that the council would take “appropriate decisions” should the states fail to meet the deadline.
The ultimatum is part of efforts to expedite deliberations on the establishment of state police across the country.
In February, the federal government formed a committee to evaluate the creation of state police.
Earlier, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information, revealed that President Bola Tinubu and state governors had agreed on frameworks for implementing state police.
A series of consultative meetings were slated to finalize plans for the decentralization initiative.
In March, NEC disclosed that 20 states had not submitted reports on state police. By September 4, the council threatened to impose unilateral decisions on non-compliant states.
