Abuja, Nigeria– The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has confirmed that the nationwide blackout experienced today resulted from a collapse of the national grid.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, AEDC said the incident occurred at 11:23 am, cutting off power supply across its coverage areas, including the Federal Capital Territory and parts of Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa states.

The company assured customers that efforts are underway, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the power sector, to restore electricity once the grid is stabilized.

As of 12:25 PM today, data from the grid shows that only 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity was available nationwide.

Breakdown of power distribution indicates: Abuja DisCo – 20 MW Ibadan DisCo – 20 MW Benin DisCo – 10 MW Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola DisCos – 0 MW each

Nigeria’s national grid has suffered repeated collapses in recent years, raising concerns over the country’s fragile power infrastructure and its impact on homes, businesses, and the economy.

The statement read, “Dear Valued Customers, please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hrs today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.

“Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized.”
