Meta Lifts Penalties On Trump’s Social Media Accounts Ahead Of 2024 Election

All US presidential candidates remain subject to the same community standards as all Facebook and Instagram users

California, United States– Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced the lifting of all penalties and restrictions on former President Donald Trump‘s social media accounts.

The decision comes as the United States gears up for the highly anticipated 2024 presidential election, where Trump remains a prominent figure in political discourse.

Trump regained access to social networks in 2023 under monitored conditions following his ban for online conduct during the January 6 insurrection. Those conditions have since been lifted.

“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for president on the same basis,” Meta said in a blogpost, citing the Republican national convention, slated for next week, which will formalize Trump as the party’s candidate.

Meta said, Trump’s accounts will no longer be subject to heightened suspension penalties, which Meta said were created in response to “extreme and extraordinary circumstances” and “have not had to be deployed”.

“All US presidential candidates remain subject to the same community standards as all Facebook and Instagram users, including those policies designed to prevent hate speech and incitement to violence,” the company’s blogpost reads.
