Kwara Court Remands Two Tricyclists For Allegedly Beating Human Rights Lawyer, Wife In Ilorin Road Dispute

The court ordered their remand after they were arraigned over allegations bordering on criminal conspiracy, assault, and causing hurt.

Ilorin, Kwara State– A Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, has remanded two tricyclists, Mohamud Saad and Sunday Emmanuel, at the Oke-Kura Correctional Facility for allegedly assaulting a human rights lawyer, Taofiq Olateju, and his wife, Monsurat Olateju, during a dispute over road obstruction.

The court ordered their remand after they were arraigned over allegations bordering on criminal conspiracy, assault, and causing hurt.

Afrika Eyes gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday when the suspects allegedly attacked the couple after they asked them to allow other road users to pass on a major road where their motorcyclists were reportedly causing obstruction.

According to the lawyer, the assault took place opposite his family house in Ilorin while he and his wife were on their way out.

Speaking to Afrika Eyes, Olateju said he had politely asked the tricyclists to move their vehicles to enable other motorists pass, but the situation quickly degenerated into violence.

He explained that the suspects descended on him and his wife, beating them severely.

During the attack, his wife, Monsurat Olateju, reportedly sustained injuries to her right hand and was later hospitalised for treatment.

Olateju further told Afrika Eyes that the suspects continued issuing threats against him and members of his family even as they were being taken into custody by law enforcement officers in the court premises.

“They assaulted me and my wife opposite my family house on Sunday. My wife sustained injuries and had to be taken to the hospital. Even while they were being taken to prison, they were still threatening me and my family,” he said.

Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Ilorin.

During the court proceedings, the defendants denied the allegations contained in the First Information Report (FIR) presented by the police.

However, Magistrate Mrs. O. M. Adebosin ordered that both suspects be remanded at the Oke-Kura Correctional Facility pending further proceedings in the case.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter until April 28, 2026, for further mention.

Details of the allegations against the suspects were contained in a First Information Report obtained by Afrika Eyes.

The FIR read in part:“CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY, ASSAULT AND CAUSING HURT CONTRARY TO SECTION 97, 267 and 244 OF PENAL CODE LAW: ON 29 ” March, 2026 at about 1640hrs one Taofeeq Olateju ‘M of 24 Wahab Folawiyo Road, Ilorin in company of his wife one Monsurat Olateju F’ of same address came to C’ Division Oja Oba Ilorin and reported that on the same date at about 1600hrs that he was on his way going to Adifa Junction toward Gambari Area, Ilorin.

“While he was held up by one tricyclists causing an obstruction on the main road, he came down and spoke gently to ,you Mohamud Saad ‘M of Adifa area Ilorin and you Sunday Emmanuel ‘M of No. 5Ganiki Sango Ilorin to allow other road user to pass.

“But  instead of taking to correction, you Mohammed Saad ‘M and you Sunday Emmanuel conspired together and make an abusive words to the Complainant personality and beat him and his wife up.

“However in the process of beating them, the complainant’s wife sustained injury on her right hand.

“During police interrogation, you both confessed to the above mentioned allegation. You there by committed the above mention offences.”

The document also listed the particulars of the suspects as follows: Mohamud Saad, male, of Adifa Area, Ilorin, adult, single, Muslim and Nigerian. Sunday Emmanuel, male, of No. 5 Ganiki Sango, Ilorin, adult, single, Muslim and Nigerian.

Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned until April 28, 2026, for further mention as the defendants remain in custody at the Oke-Kura Correctional Facility.
