Kebbi Deputy Speaker Abducted By Gunmen After Evening Prayers

The incident occurred on Friday night at about 8:20 p.m. in Bagudo town, shortly after the lawmaker observed the Isha’i prayer.

Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State– The Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Sama’ila-Bagudo, has been abducted by suspected bandits in Bagudo Local Government Area of the state.

The incident occurred on Friday night at about 8:20 p.m. in Bagudo town, shortly after the lawmaker observed the Isha’i prayer and was heading home, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the Kebbi State Police Command.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, said a joint security team comprising police tactical units, military personnel, and local vigilantes has been deployed to track down the abductors and rescue the Deputy Speaker safely.

“The joint team is currently combing the bandits’ routes and nearby forests with a view to rescuing the lawmaker unhurt and arresting the perpetrators of the dastardly act,” Abubakar stated.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.

“The CP has also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the police and other security agencies to ensure peace and stability in the state,” the statement added.

However, the police did not disclose whether the Deputy Speaker was accompanied by any security personnel at the time of his abduction.

Kebbi State, located in Nigeria’s North West region, has been grappling with persistent incidents of kidnapping and banditry.

Recently, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) threatened to boycott court activities across the state following the abduction of one of its members, Isyaku Muhammad-Danjumma.
