Kano Govt Bans Cross-Dressing, Thuggery Depictions In Movies

Kano State– The Kano State Film Censorship Board has announced a ban on movies that depict or endorse cross-dressing and thuggery within the state.

Abba El-Mustapha, the executive secretary of the Board, on Wednesday, April 3rd, disclosed this during a gathering with Kannywood management and stakeholders.

According to Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the spokesperson for the board, the decision to ban these films was prompted by public apprehension regarding the possible encouragement of criminal activities and unsuitable conduct among youth.

“It is high time to fish out any film that may demoralize our customs, norms and values in the name of reaching popularity, viewers or business making.”

Following a statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, clarifying that cross-dressing is not deemed illegal under Nigerian law, it’s apparent why figures such as the controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, commonly referred to as Bobrisky, and others alike cannot face arrest.

He noted that cross-dressing might not align with societal norms but said that the police were bound by the law and could not arrest individuals based solely on their choice of clothing or lifestyle.
