Insecurity Will End After Elections, Says Akpabio, Blames Political Opponents
Akpabio also took a swipe at opposition figures, appearing to mock Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
Abuja, Nigeria– Senate President Godswill Akpabio has claimed that the rising wave of insecurity across Nigeria is politically motivated and will subside shortly after the upcoming elections.
Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday during the official commissioning of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, an event presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Addressing dignitaries at the ceremony, the Senate President alleged that individuals opposed to the current administration were behind the surge in violent incidents nationwide.
“Insecurity is increasing because election is coming, because people don’t know what to do again. Immediately after election, two weeks after election, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people,” Akpabio said.
He praised President Tinubu’s performance, insisting that critics of the government were resorting to destabilisation tactics.
Akpabio also took a swipe at opposition figures, appearing to mock Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
“Opposition is in disarray, someone got six million votes and abandoned the party, abandoned the six million votes and went shopping for another platform and they are blaming the ruling party,” he said.
Calling for patience among Nigerians, Akpabio added: “Let Nigerians be patient with you, you are doing the right thing.”
The Senate President further commended the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Zacch Adedeji, describing him as a rare tax official who enjoys public goodwill.
“Dr Zacch Adedeji is the first tax-man that Nigerians love; even in the Bible people don’t like tax collectors. Zacch has done very well and Nigerians are happy with him,” he said.
The newly inaugurated NRS complex, described by officials as a world-class edifice, comprises 16 floors across three towers and is expected to accommodate approximately 3,000 personnel.
The development follows the signing of the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act by President Tinubu in June 2025, formally transforming the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) into the NRS.
