IGP Orders Dismissal, Prosecution Of Officers Over Effurun Killing As IGP Vows Zero Tolerance
Abuja, Nigeria– The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the fatal shooting of Mr Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, stirred outrage after Ogidi was allegedly shot by police personnel under controversial circumstances.
Providing an official update on Tuesday, the Force disclosed that all officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The statement, signed by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said they were subsequently transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they underwent what the police described as “expedited disciplinary proceedings.”
According to the statement, “Sequel to the earlier directive of the Inspector-General of Police, all officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they were subjected to expedited disciplinary proceedings.”
The police said the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), alongside other internal mechanisms, has now concluded its review of the matter, with findings indicting the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman.
“The findings established unequivocally that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms,” the statement read.
“His actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law.”
Following the outcome of the review, the FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of Usman and other officers found culpable in the incident.
The police leadership confirmed that the Inspector-General has approved the recommendation and has forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
“Consequently, the FDC has recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police has approved the recommendations and forwarded same to the Police Service Commission for ratification.”
The Force further disclosed that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution.

Reiterating the Force’s stance, the IGP warned that the police institution would not tolerate abuse of power or unlawful killings by its personnel.
“The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and abuse of power. No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.
