Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq: The Politics Of Strategic Silence — By Comrade Bolakale
At a point, many had concluded that Governor AbdulRazaq lacked the political leverage required to harmonise the party’s divided interests and produce a consensus successor seamlessly. Once again, however, he proved critics wrong.
There is no doubt that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq deserves commendation for once again demonstrating exceptional political strategy and tactical leadership. This is arguably the third major political phase in which he has shown an uncommon ability to navigate difficult terrains and emerge victorious.
In 2018, when many political observers looked elsewhere and underestimated his chances, he emerged unexpectedly to clinch the party’s ticket ahead of more established aspirants. The outcome shocked many, leaving some disappointed and openly frustrated. Yet, Governor AbdulRazaq weathered the storm with calmness and focus. Beyond winning the governorship election, he also succeeded in managing aggrieved party stakeholders without compromising the authority and direction of his leadership.
A similar scenario played out during the Aanigba political crisis, when disagreements between the governor and some influential Otooge actors became public and intense. While many expected the division to weaken his political structure, he once again deployed a calm and calculated approach that eventually worked in his favour. Interestingly, several individuals who had defected to other parties, including the SDP, later returned to align with him, and he still secured reelection comfortably.
The latest demonstration of political capacity is the emergence of Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu as the APC candidate and likely successor to the current administration. At a point, many had concluded that Governor AbdulRazaq lacked the political leverage required to harmonise the party’s divided interests and produce a consensus successor seamlessly. Once again, however, he proved critics wrong.
I strongly believe the endorsement of Amb. Yahaya Seriki was part of a broader political calculation. That endorsement appeared to calm tensions, reunite divided blocs, and prepare the political atmosphere for the eventual emergence of Hon. Danladi. The signs were visible: aspirants began stepping down, serving National Assembly members and other dignitaries mobilised to receive Amb. Yahaya was at the airport, while supporters openly pledged allegiance.
Whatever eventual developments led Amb. Yahaya Seriki to quietly accept the final outcome, it is difficult to believe Governor AbdulRazaq was unaware of the broader strategy from the onset.
As I once remarked to Hon. Danladi and Bisi Photo, “The Speaker does not necessarily need the crowd; he only needs the governor’s backing to secure the ticket.” That reality has once again played out.
Governor AbdulRazaq has not only shown mastery of political strategy, but he has also demonstrated the strength and influence that often come with silence, patience, and calculated leadership.
In many ways, the eventual endorsement carried greater weight and legitimacy than an earlier endorsement. Because the integrity of any society is often reflected in the character and credibility of those occupying leadership positions.
At the same time, the PDP should avoid the assumption that its chances automatically improve regardless of who emerges as its candidate. Political realities on the ground suggest that Kwara North remains largely aligned with the APC, and the acceptability of SYD within the region could make it difficult for opposition parties to secure substantial votes there. But perhaps that conversation is for another day.
