Port-Harcourt, Rivers State– The Rivers State Executive Council has cancelled the ₦134 billion contract awarded for the reconstruction of the State Secretariat complex in Port Harcourt.

The contract, originally approved by the former sole administrator of the state, Vice Admiral Ikot Ete Ibas (retd), was awarded to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) during the period of emergency rule.

At its meeting on Thursday, the Council nullified the contract and directed CCECC to refund the ₦20 billion mobilisation fee already paid by the previous administration.

In a related development, the Council approved the formation of a six-member committee chaired by Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu to identify suitable sites for the construction of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres across the state to facilitate external examinations.

The Council further instructed the state’s flood control committee, also led by Odu, to implement urgent measures to address flooding in affected communities.

It also cautioned residents against actions that obstruct drainage channels, which worsen flood incidents in the state.
