Former NBC DG, Modibbo Kawu Criticises Rising Media Awards For Politicians, Calls For Ethical Journalism
He called on media houses to remain objective and prioritise investigative reporting over commercialised endorsements.
Ilorin, Kwara State –Former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, has expressed concerns over the increasing trend of media organisations granting awards to politicians.
He explained the need for a balanced approach that upholds press freedom while ensuring ethical journalism, particularly in the digital space.
Dr. Kawu noted that while recognising achievements is essential, excessive award culture in the media could compromise journalistic integrity and public trust.
He called on media houses to remain objective and prioritise investigative reporting over commercialised endorsements.
Speaking with members of the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) during an Iftar event held at his residence in GRA Ilorin on Monday.
The event provided a platform for Dr. Kawu to share his insights on journalism ethics, media integrity, and the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital space.
Dr. Kawu, a seasoned journalist and former Editor of the Daily Trust Newspaper, cricriticised growing trend of media houses awarding politicians.
He described the practice as a “joke” that undermines the credibility and integrity of journalism.
However, reflecting on his tenure at Daily Trust, he revealed that he never entertained the idea of giving awards to politicians, as it compromises the independence and objectivity of the media.
Instead, he highlighted how Daily Trust chose to recognise professionals making meaningful contributions to society, such as a doctor in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, who dedicated his life to helping women who were victims of sexual violence.
The former NBC boss also emphasised he importance of unity among journalists, urgied media practitioners to foster teamwork and mutual respect.
He warned against the dangers of division within the profession, which he said could weaken the media’s ability to hold power to account and serve as the voice of the people.
On the contentious issue of social media regulation, Dr. Kawu expressed strong opposition, stating that such measures contradict the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression.
He called for a balanced approach that protects this fundamental right while promoting ethical journalism in the digital space.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by misinformation and fake news but argued that these issues should be addressed through education and capacity building rather than restrictive regulations.
Dr. Kawu also stressed the need for continuous training and professional development for journalists, particularly in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
He noted that staying abreast of technological advancements and honing new skills are essential for maintaining credibility and relevance in the modern media environment.
The Iftar event not only provided an opportunity for intellectual discourse but also strengthened the bond between Dr. Kawu and the Kwara online media community.

Dr. Ishaq Modibbo Kawu is a renowned journalist, academic, and media administrator with decades of experience in the Nigerian media industry. He served as the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) from 2016 to 2020, where he oversaw the regulation of broadcasting in Nigeria.
Before his appointment at the NBC, he was the Editor of the Daily Trust Newspaper, one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers, where he championed ethical journalism and investigative reporting.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kawu has been a vocal advocate for media freedom, ethical journalism, and the professional development of journalists.
His contributions to the industry have earned him respect and recognition both locally and internationally.
