Tripoli, Libya— Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani has officially resigned as president of the Libyan Football Federation, a decision announced during a regular meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly.

His resignation, reported by The Libya Observer, took effect following a gathering on Sunday, where he expressed his desire to step down from the role amid ongoing challenges within Libyan sports.

Al-Shalmani’s resignation comes at a time of increasing concern regarding the treatment of the Nigerian national football team as they prepare for a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

“I do not want to be part of the failure in Libyan sports,” Al-Shalmani stated, explained the difficulties faced during his tenure.

“We faced difficulties during the previous period,” he acknowledged, before expressing gratitude to his colleagues.

“I thank all members of the General Assembly, and I forgive everyone from all segments of the sports sector,” he added.

Despite the circumstances leading to his resignation, Al-Shalmani stood firm on his record of service.

“I have a history in the International, Arab and African Federation, and no one can deny that,” he added.

The resignation comes at a challenging moment for Libyan football.

The Nigerian national team, set to compete in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Libya on Tuesday, experienced what they described as “inhumane treatment” upon their arrival.

The team was detained at an abandoned airport for over 15 hours and has decided not to proceed with the match due to safety concerns.

Ademola Olajire, the director of communications for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), confirmed that the team will return home.

“The players have decided against playing the match, and NFF officials are arranging for the team’s flight back to Nigeria,” Olajire stated.

In response, the Libyan Football Federation explained the reasons behind the prolonged delay at Al Abraq International Airport, attributing it to routine air traffic and logistical issues rather than any intentional wrongdoing.

In a statement issued on Monday via X, the LFF clarified that the diversion of the Nigerian team’s flight was not meant as a hostile action.

“We strongly deny any allegations of foul play or sabotage in this situation,” the LFF asserted.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Super Eagles players and officials are preparing to leave Libya.

A sports enthusiast, known as Pooja Media, shared this information on his X handle on Monday, stating, “Super Eagles players and all officials are boarding to fly out of Libya to Nigeria. Thank God.”

Confirming this, player Bruno Onyemaechi added, “I have washed my hands of Libya. I want nothing to do with you again. Thank God I’m going back.”
