Abuja, Nigeria-  The federal government has withdrawn its offer to sell subsidized 50-kilogram bags of rice to public servants at N40,000 each.

The announcement came through a circular titled “Withdrawal of Internal Circular on Sale of Subsidized Rice to Public Servants,” which was issued on August 2, 2024—coinciding with the second day of the “End Bad Governance in Nigeria” nationwide protests.

The sale, which was initially publicized on August 1, 2024, was managed by the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs Human Resources Management Department.

It was the same Ministry that issued the recent notice retracting the offer.

As of now, no explanation has been provided for the abrupt cancellation of the rice sale program.

The development adds another layer of controversy to the ongoing protests, which are calling for significant reforms in governance and public policy.
