The suspect, said to be an indigene of Oderiko in Ebonyi State’s Ikwo Local Government Area, was arrested on Monday morning by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following the tragic incident that reportedly occurred on Sunday afternoon.
Enugu State-The Enugu State Government has announced the arrest of a woman identified as Mrs. Ogechi John for allegedly beating her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John, to death in the Emene area of the state.
The suspect, said to be an indigene of Oderiko in Ebonyi State’s Ikwo Local Government Area, was arrested on Monday morning by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following the tragic incident that reportedly occurred on Sunday afternoon.
Afrika Eyes gathered that the child was allegedly beaten to death at the family residence located in Nchatancha, Emene, within Enugu East Local Government Area.
It was gathered that the incident happened around 3pm on Sunday and claimed that the deceased child had been subjected to repeated abuse and severe maltreatment by the suspect before her death.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, said the state government had already moved swiftly to ensure the suspect was apprehended.
“It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide. We swung into action immediately upon learning of this tragedy to ensure the suspect was arrested,” Enih said.
The commissioner added that the government would closely monitor the case and push for speedy justice.
“We will be pressing for a thorough and expedited investigation to ensure that justice is not just done, but done really fast. Nobody should take another’s life, and certainly not the life of any child in Enugu State. We condemn it in totality,” she added.
The state government reiterated its commitment to protecting children and warned that anyone found guilty of child abuse, violence, or homicide would face prosecution under the law.
Mrs. John remains in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Amanda’s death.
However, the government statement did not disclose the police division responsible for the arrest or the exact detention facility where the suspect is being held.
