Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State– Residents and opposition party agents have accused members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of engaging in open vote buying during the election at Ward 5, Polling Unit 3, Ado-West, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, as voters were allegedly issued tags before casting their ballots and later used the tags to collect money.
Afrika Eyes observed the alleged vote-buying operation at the polling unit, where APC agents were reportedly distributing tags to prospective voters before they entered the voting area.
According to observations at the scene, voters were instructed to cast their votes and subsequently return with the tags to receive cash payments.
The development occurred at Ward 5, Polling Unit 3, Ado-West, Ado-Ekiti, where Sunday Asefon, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Student Engagement, was seen arriving in a black Jeep vehicle.
Meanwhile, Asefon was observed speaking with an APC party agent under a bridge located near the polling unit. Shortly after the discussion, he reportedly left the area.
Afrika Eyes further observed an open vote-buying operation at the polling unit. Despite the presence of security personnel, including police officers, no officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were seen at the location.
The police officers present were observed maintaining order and ensuring that voters remained coordinated while standing in queues.
An agent of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who requested anonymity for fear of victimisation, condemned the alleged practice and described the scale of vote buying at the polling unit as unprecedented.
“There is open vote buying in this place. You can see it yourself how tags are being given to the voters, and they are not even hiding it,” the ADC agent told Afrika Eyes.
“It is obvious that vote buying is massive here. After casting their votes, the voters return with the tags and use them to collect money.
“The security agencies are here, but nobody is apprehending those involved. Everything is happening openly in front of everyone.”
