Ilorin, Nigeria – There was a dramatic scene at the Ilorin Area Court on Tuesday when an ex-convict, Segun Samuel, escaped from custody after cleverly freeing himself from leg restraints using a broomstick.

The incident occurred shortly after the suspect was brought into the court premises.

Samuel pretended he was heading to the restroom and used the opportunity to remove the chains from his legs with a concealed broomstick.

In a swift move, he scaled the court fence and fled into a nearby community, triggering panic and an immediate manhunt.

He was immediately re-arrested and handed back to officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Prosecution Counsel, ASP Samuel Mayowa, who witnessed the incident, stated that the ex-convict is currently standing trial in four separate criminal cases.

“He has four different criminal cases in this court. One of the cases was heard on Monday and he was sentenced to one year imprisonment.

“In the second criminal case, he was sentenced to six months community service and the third case was supposed to be heard today, before he pulled that stunt ,” he said.

He stated that, fortunately, police officers at the court premises, along with a prison warder, immediately sprang into action and gave chase.

However, after an extensive search and with the assistance of members of the community, the ex-convict was eventually located in a dilapidated building in the Oke-Suna area of Ilorin.

The Correctional Service officer was contacted, and the fugitive was successfully apprehended and returned to custody.
