Doctor Dies In Church After 72-Hour Shift At LUTH

Dr. Umoh Michael, working with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has slumped and died in the church after he was said to have worked 72 hours shift at the hospital. Michael had on returning from LUTH on Sunday after the three days shift and went to his church, United Evangelical Church, where he slumped and died.

The resident doctors at LUTH have lodged a formal complaint with Prof. Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, the Chief Medical Director (CMD). The Association of Resident Doctors, LUTH chapter, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their colleague, Dr. Michael, who passed away on September 17, 2023, after his extended call duty in the Neurosurgery Unit.

Dr. Michael’s roommate confirmed that he had hardly slept in their shared accommodation for the past week due to frequent on-call responsibilities. On the day of the incident, he returned home at about 3 a.m. following surgeries and other demanding tasks in the Neurosurgery Unit.

However, Omolola Fakeye, the Public Relations Officer at LUTH, disputed the claim that anyone worked for 72 hours straight.

Fakeye stated that he had not been fully briefed on the circumstances surrounding Dr. Michael’s death and indicated that he would seek more information before making any official statements.
