Court Reinstates Suspended Edo LG Chairmen, Deputies
The court also restrained the state government and its officials from acting on the resolution of the Edo State House of Assembly
Benin, Edo State– An Edo State High Court sitting in Benin has ordered the reinstatement of 18 suspended local government chairmen and their deputies in the state.
Presiding over the case, Justice Efe Ikponmwonba granted a mandatory injunction compelling Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Edo State Government, and other respondents, including the Attorney General and the Accountant General of the state, to restore the claimants to their respective offices.
The court also restrained the state government and its officials from acting on the resolution of the Edo State House of Assembly, which had earlier suspended the chairmen and deputies.
Justice Ikponmwonba emphasized that the status quo, as of December 12, 2024, must be maintained until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed on the same date.
“The court orders a mandatory injunction compelling the defendant, by themselves, their privies, servants, agents, or howsoever named, to restore the chairmen and vice chairmen to their respective local government councils,” the judge declared.
The matter was adjourned to February 17, 2025, for hearing, with Justice Ikponmwonba directing that a hearing notice be issued and served on all defendants.
