Abeokuta, Ogun State- Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s escalating debt crisis, attributing it to mismanagement by previous administrations.

The ex-president warned that the burden of this financial predicament would inevitably fall on the shoulders of future generations.

In a statement released by his Media Aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, it was mentioned that the elder statesman expressed his thoughts during an interaction with the 2023 awardees of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, an initiative led by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

According to him, with the level of mismanagement of the previous debts written off for the country, it would be almost impossible for any administration to get a similar gesture in the continent.

Obasanjo declared that such debts represent a trap that neither individuals nor nations should succumb to, as they pose a burdensome weight on any economy.

The former President emphasized that leadership stands as the primary challenge confronting the continent, stating, “The coming generations will be compelled to bear the burden of the existing debt being accumulated by various countries in the continent.”

He, however, commended Pastor Oyakhilome for the efforts being put into building leaders, adding that the nation needed more people like him to address the leadership crisis facing the continent.

During the question and answer session, Obasanjo highlighted the essential qualities of a leader, emphasizing that a leader should set good examples, demonstrate boldness and courage in decision-making, acknowledge mistakes and learn from them, and possess a realistic vision.

Meanwhile, at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Ogun State 5th thanksgiving service for his conferment as the Asiwaju Onigbagbo, Ogun State, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the former President expressed optimism about the country’s socio-economic future.

He assured that through prayers and thanksgiving, the nation’s conditions could significantly improve in the next four years or so.

Obasanjo acknowledged the current challenging socio-economic situations in the country but attributed the prevailing mercies to God.

He encouraged gratitude in all circumstances, emphasizing that what seems dire today might transform positively in a few years. He thanked the congregation for their continuous prayers and expressed his reliance on the “Fellow of Grace and Mercy of God” during these difficult times.
