Catholic Priest Arrested For Allegedly Shooting Teen Dead Over Fireworks During New Year In Imo

Owerri, Imo State- A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya, has been arrested for allegedly shooting a teenage boy dead during the New Year Mass at St. Columbus Catholic Church, Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on January 1, 2025, when a group of boys reportedly set off knockouts (fireworks) within the church premises.

According to a resident, the priest initially fired shots into the air to disperse the group, but while attempting to handle a jammed firearm, it accidentally discharged, striking one of the boys.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest and assured the public of a detailed inquiry.

“We have commenced an investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the incident. Updates will be provided as the case progresses,” Okoye said.
