BREAKING: Tinubu Removes Edun, Appoints Oyedele As New Finance Minister In Cabinet Shake-Up
Mr. Wale Edun is to hand over to Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, who is now appointed as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy
Abuja,Nigeria– President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a minor reshuffle of the Federal Executive Council, removing Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and naming Taiwo Oyedele as his replacement.
The decision was contained in an official memo signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, which also announced the exit of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, Yomi Odunuga, the presidency confirmed that Edun has been directed to hand over immediately to Oyedele, who until now served as Minister of State in the same ministry.
“Mr. Wale Edun is to hand over to Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, who is now appointed as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.”
The memo further disclosed that Muttaqha Rabe Darma has been named as the ministerial nominee and minister-designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, replacing Dangiwa, who has also been instructed to transfer responsibilities to the Minister of State in the ministry.
According to the directive, “all handing over and taking over processes should be completed on or before close of business on Thursday, 23rd April, 2026.”
Explaining the rationale behind the cabinet reshuffle, Akume stated: “These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He added that President Tinubu exercised his constitutional powers in effecting the changes.
“The President, in approving the cabinet reshuffle, has fully exercised his powers as conferred on him by Sections 147 and 148 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended),” Akume said.
The President also expressed appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service, wishing them well in their future endeavours.
Akume noted that Tinubu reassured members of the cabinet that reforms within the executive arm would remain ongoing.
“The process of reinvigoration shall be continuous,” he said.
