Abuja, Nigeria- The Nigerian Senate has unanimously approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to refund N24 billion to Kebbi and Nasarawa states for airport construction projects carried out on behalf of the federal government.

The decision came after a report was presented by Senator Manu Haruna of Taraba Central on behalf of the committee on local and foreign debts.

In May 2024, President Tinubu requested N15 billion for Kebbi and N9 billion for Nasarawa, stating the federal government’s responsibility for aviation, including the safety of aircraft and the transportation of passengers and goods by air, as stipulated in the second schedule of the constitution.

Senator Aminu Abbas from Adamawa Central explained the importance of airports for regional development and addressing insecurity, urging immediate approval of the refund.

Senator Isah Jibrin from Kogi East also voiced support, noting that his state had recently received federal approval for its own airport project and would seek similar reimbursement upon its completion.

The request was passed following a voice vote led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, marking a significant step toward enhancing aviation infrastructure in the affected states.
