BREAKING: Protest, Explosions Rock Rivers Councils As Violent Clashes Erupt Over Chairmen’s Assumption

Port-Harcourt, Rivers State- Bloody clashes, gunfire, and explosions marred the resumption of duties by newly sworn-in local government chairmen in Rivers State, following their inauguration by Governor Siminialayi Fubara.

Tensions escalated across several local government areas as opposition groups stormed council offices, leading to widespread violence.

In Emohua Local Government Area, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who opposed the election results forcefully took control of the council.

Similar unrest was reported in other regions as protesters clashed with supporters of the newly elected chairmen.

The violence intensified after the Inspector-General of Police ordered the withdrawal of officers stationed at the secretariats, a move initially intended to prevent chaos.

In Eleme Local Government Area, arsonists set the council secretariat on fire by hurling explosives, causing extensive damage to vehicles and property.

Meanwhile, in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, protesters stormed the council headquarters in Omoku, preventing the newly installed chairman from assuming office.
