Abuja, Nigeria– In a nationwide broadcast on March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing escalating political instability and governance challenges.

This decisive action includes the immediate suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

The crisis in Rivers State has intensified over recent weeks, marked by a power struggle between Governor Fubara and factions within the state’s political landscape.

Tensions escalated when the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor, accusing him of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement.

The assembly’s notice highlighted alleged unconstitutional expenditures and obstruction of legislative functions.

President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation, stating that the state had been at a standstill since the crisis began.

He emphasised that personal interventions to resolve the impasse were unsuccessful, necessitating the invocation of Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution to restore order and ensure governance in Rivers State.
