Abuja, Nigeria– The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that investigations into 16 serving officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria earlier detained for acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations have been concluded, with findings indicating that some of the officers were allegedly involved in plotting to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This disclosure was contained in a press statement issued on Monday and signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.

According to the statement, the outcome of the investigation has been forwarded to appropriate superior authorities in line with existing military regulations and procedures.

“It would be recalled that the Defence Headquarters issued a press statement in October 2025 regarding the arrest of sixteen officers over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations,” the statement read.

The DHQ explained that following the arrests, a comprehensive and thorough investigation was initiated to examine the conduct of the affected officers and the circumstances surrounding the allegations against them.

The probe, the military said, was conducted strictly in accordance with established military procedures and internal disciplinary frameworks.

According to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), the investigation uncovered serious allegations against some of the officers, including involvement in activities deemed inconsistent with their oath of service and professional responsibilities.

“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has examined the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel,” the statement said.

It added: “The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

The DHQ disclosed that officers found to have a case to answer would now face formal trial under military law.

“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations,” the statement noted.

The military authorities were careful to emphasise that the actions being taken against the affected officers are strictly internal disciplinary measures and should not be misconstrued.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria reiterates that measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks,” the statement said.

The DHQ further stressed that the Nigerian military remains firmly committed to constitutional governance and civilian authority.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” it added.
