BREAKING: Kidnap Kingpin Linked To Oba Olanipekun’s Abduction Arrested In Kwara; Security Foils Planned Ileya Festival Attacks
The suspect, described by security sources as a high-ranking figure within a criminal network terrorising communities in the Babanla and Oreke axis, was apprehended around Okeode during a coordinated operation by joint security forces.
Ilorin, Kwara State– A major breakthrough has been recorded in the fight against kidnapping in Kwara State as security operatives have arrested a notorious kingpin linked to the abduction of a traditional ruler, Oba Olanipekun of Afin-Ilere, in the Ifelodun Local Government Area.
The suspect, described by security sources as a high-ranking figure within a criminal network terrorising communities in the Babanla and Oreke axis, was apprehended around Okeode during a coordinated operation by joint security forces.
Afrika Eyes gathered that the arrest followed actionable intelligence indicating that the gang was planning fresh attacks across parts of Ifelodun and neighbouring Irepodun Local Government Areas, particularly targeting the period of the Ileya (Eid-el-Kabir) celebrations.
The development was confirmed in a statement obtained by Afrika Eyes and signed by the Coordinator of the Joint Security Watch Kwara South, Elder Olaitan Oyin-Zubair.
According to the statement, the operation was carried out by a joint security team led by Captain Abiola during what was described as a “surprise routine movement” across flashpoints including Afin-Ilere, Owode Offaro, and Oreke.
“The suspect has been identified as one of the masterminds behind the kidnapping of Oba Olanipekun of Afin-Ilere,” Elder Olaitan said.
He added that intelligence reports uncovered a broader and more dangerous plot by the gang to unleash violence during the festive period.
“Intelligence shows the gang planned to carry out attacks in parts of Ifelodun and Irepodun LGAs before or during the Ileya festivities,” he stated.
The statement further reassured residents that security agencies have heightened surveillance and operational readiness across Kwara South to prevent any breach of peace.
“All security agencies remain on red alert to ensure a peaceful Eid al-Kabir celebration and sustained security beyond the holiday,” Elder Olaitan added.
Residents in the affected communities have long decried a surge in kidnappings and banditry, with the abduction of Oba Olanipekun drawing widespread outrage and renewed calls for decisive government action.
