BREAKING : Kano Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Resigns Amid Impeachment Proceedings

Kano State– The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned from office amid an ongoing impeachment process initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The resignation was disclosed on Friday in a statement issued by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

Abdussalam’s decision comes days after the Kano State House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against him over allegations that have not been fully detailed publicly.

Earlier in the week, a Federal High Court sitting in Kano declined an application filed by the deputy governor seeking to stop the impeachment process. The court’s refusal to grant the request cleared the way for the state legislature to continue with its proceedings.

Announcing the development, the Kwankwasiyya Movement said the resignation had been formally tendered and communicated.

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public, the good people of Kano State, and the entire nation that the Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office,” the statement said.

According to the movement, the decision was reached after careful consideration of the prevailing political circumstances and the need to protect governance in the state from further disruption.

It stated that the resignation, though difficult, was taken in the overall interest of the people and to ensure the smooth functioning of government.

“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor. In view of this, it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve ”

The statement, however, clarified that Abdussalam’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt regarding the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly. The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” the statement said.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement described the step as an act of political maturity and statesmanship aimed at preventing further escalation of tensions in Kano State.

It noted that the decision was taken to preserve peace and ensure that governance and development activities in the state are not hindered by prolonged political conflict.

The movement further disclosed that Abdussalam would now focus his energy on strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The Deputy Governor has also resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.”

Supporters of the movement and residents of Kano State were urged to remain calm and continue to support democratic processes.

“The movement calls on its supporters and the good people of Kano State to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to the ideals of good governance and democracy,” the statement said.

It added that further details regarding the resignation and the movement’s next political steps would be communicated to the public in due course.
