BREAKING: Court Nullifies Obasa’s Removal As Lagos Speaker, Declares Assembly Proceedings Invalid
The court further voided all legislative proceedings and resolutions conducted by the House on January 13, 2025 — the date Obasa was controversially removed from office.
Ikeja, Lagos State –The Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly as “illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.”
The court further voided all legislative proceedings and resolutions conducted by the House on January 13, 2025 — the date Obasa was controversially removed from office.
Justice Yetunde Adesanya, delivering the judgment, upheld Obasa’s claim that due process was not followed in his ouster.
She ruled that the actions of the Assembly amounted to a “flagrant disregard of constitutional procedures and the internal standing rules of the House.”
“The Lagos State House of Assembly acted ultra vires its powers. The removal of Hon. Mudashiru Obasa without adherence to due legislative process is unlawful and cannot stand in the eyes of the law,” the judge stated.
Obasa, who was reinstated shortly after the court proceedings began in January, had approached the court to challenge what he described as an orchestrated political coup.
He argued that his removal lacked quorum and did not follow the procedures stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution and the House’s own rules.
