BREAKING: Court Grants Sowore N200 Million Bail, Orders Him To Deposit International Passport, Provide Traditional Ruler

Abuja, Nigeria– The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted bail to the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, in the sum of N200 million.

Justice Muhammad Umar, who presided over the matter, restored Sowore’s bail and ordered him to deposit his international passport with the court registrar pending the determination of the case.

The judge also imposed stringent bail conditions, directing that Sowore must produce two sureties in like sum.

According to the court, one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second surety must be a person who owns landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Justice Umar ruled that, in addition to meeting the bail conditions, Sowore must deposit his international passport with the court registrar.

Sowore is currently standing trial over charges filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS) following his comment in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.”

The human rights activist was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre last week after proceedings in the case.

Delivering the ruling on Tuesday, Justice Umar said the court was restoring Sowore’s bail subject to the conditions that he provide two qualified sureties, with one being a traditional ruler from his community and the other a landed property owner within the FCT, and that he surrender his international passport to the court registrar.

The case was subsequently adjourned for the continuation of proceedings.
