Ilorin, Kwara State– Terrorists suspected be armed bandits on Monday evening invaded Oro-Ago community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, triggering panic among residents before security operatives and local vigilantes repelled the attackers.
Sources in the community told Afrika Eyes that the attack occurred at about 7pm when the gunmen stormed parts of the town, causing residents to scamper for safety amid fears of possible abductions.
However, a swift joint response by local vigilante groups, police operatives and soldiers of the Nigerian Army forced the attackers to retreat after a brief confrontation.
According to residents, security operatives quickly mobilised to the area following distress calls from locals who noticed the presence of the armed men moving towards the community.
A source familiar with the incident told Afrika Eyes that the combined efforts of the security agencies and the vigilantes prevented what could have turned into a major kidnapping operation.
“The bandits have run away. For now there is no report of any kidnapping. They have chased the bandits out of the town and the security operatives are pursuing them right now,” the source said.
The source added that residents are currently praying that no one was abducted or injured during the attempted attack.
“We pray that there are no casualties and that no one has been taken away by the bandits,” the source added.
Oro-Ago community, located in Ifelodun Local Government Area, has in recent times witnessed heightened security concerns as armed groups suspected to be bandits have increasingly moved into communities across parts of North-Central Nigeria.
Security operatives were said to have mounted patrols around the community and nearby areas while pursuing the fleeing attackers to prevent them from regrouping or targeting neighbouring villages.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, while efforts to confirm whether any arrests had been made or whether anyone sustained injuries were still ongoing.
The development once again highlights the growing concerns over the spread of banditry beyond the North-West into parts of the North-Central region, with residents calling for stronger security presence to prevent future attacks.
