BREAKING: ADC Crisis Deepens As Kachikwu-Led Faction Declares Himself ‘Sole Candidate’ For 2027 Presidential Election

Abuja, Nigeria– A fresh crisis has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a faction of the party has adopted its 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, as the sole presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general elections.
The faction, led by Kachikwu, made the announcement at its National Convention held on Sunday at A-Class Event Centre in Abuja, further deepening the internal divisions rocking the opposition party.
Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Benue State ADC Chairman, Elias Adikwu, announced the adoption, stating that delegates at the convention unanimously endorsed Kachikwu as the party’s sole candidate for 2027.
Meanwhile, the newly elected National Chairman of the faction, Abdulkadir Mohammed Bashir, presented Kachikwu with the party’s flag, charging him to lead the party to victory in the next general election.
The convention also saw the emergence of new members of the National Working Committee (NWC), including Board of Trustees Chairman, Kingsley Oggah; Deputy National Chairman, Johnny Tovie Derek; National Secretary, Kennedy O. Odion; National Treasurer, Dr. Joe Aroh; and National Financial Secretary, Chief Amirigoye.
Others elected into the NWC are National Legal Adviser, Dr. Chris Ugwu; National Organising Secretary, Elias Adikwu; and National Chief Whip, Patrick Ambut.
However, the development underscores the deepening leadership tussle within the ADC, as another powerful faction led by former Senate President, David Mark, had earlier conducted a separate national convention in Abuja on April 14, 2026.
At that convention, which reportedly attracted over 1,000 delegates, the Mark-led faction amended the party’s constitution and affirmed him as the substantive National Chairman of the party.
The faction also announced the expulsion of several members, including factional chairman Nafiu Bala and lawmaker Leke Abejide, accusing them of anti-party activities and dragging internal disputes before the courts.
The Mark-led camp drew support from high-profile political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as part of a broader coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
