Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State— Nigerian human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has been released from custody after successfully meeting his bail conditions.

The vocal advocate for justice and democratic reforms departed for Lagos State shortly after his release.

Farotimi, a figure in Nigeria’s civil rights landscape, had been detained in Ekiti prison since December 4, 2024, over defamation.

Afrika Eyes had earlier reported that the Ekiti State Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti has granted bail to human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, who is facing charges of cybercrime linked to alleged defamation.

The bail, granted on Friday, comes after the court had earlier denied Farotimi’s application, sparking widespread debate about his constitutional rights.

Farotimi’s arrest followed a petition by legal luminary Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), leading to a case with suit number MAD/1,476.C/2024.

Presiding Magistrate Adekunle Adewole set bail at N30 million, requiring two sureties, one of whom must own property.

Meanwhile, additional conditions included the surrender of Farotimi’s passport to the court registrar and a restriction on granting media interviews during the trial.

A human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, made this known on his X handle on Tuesday, stating that Farotimi is on his way back to Lagos.

He said, I am pleased to report that Dele Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti state and is now returning home to Lagos. The struggle continues.”
